MOGADISHU, Somalia - US military said on Wednesday it conducted a new airstrike in central Somalia, targeting the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group of Al-Shabaab.
The US Africa command [AFRICOM] announced that the drone strike was carried out in the vacinity of Bulo-Burde within Hiran region on September 18 at the request of Somali government.
At the request of the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command conducted an airstrike against al-Shabaab terrorists who were attacking Somali National Army forces near Buulobarde, Somalia, on Sept. 18," said AFRICOM.
The AFRICOM confirmed that the strike killed 27 Al-Shabaab members. The defensive strikes allowed the Somali and AU troops to regain the initiative and continue the operation to disrupt Al-Shabaab in the Hiran region of central Somalia.
This operation is the largest combined Somali and ATMIS offensive operation in five years.

The US which has hundreds of troops on the ground said it will continue to support Somali and ATMIS partners in defeating Al-Shabaab fighters who threaten the peace and stability of Somalia.
