US Says It Killed Militants in Somalia done strike

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The U.S. military said on Tuesday it carried out a drone strike targeting Al-Shabaab militants in Somalia's central Hiran region amid an ongoing ground offensive.

The U.S. Africa Command [AFRICOM] said the airstrikes were conducted to protect Somali forces who came under an Al-Shabaab attack near Buulobarde town on October 23.

The town lies about 218 km north-northwest of Mogadishu, the Somali capital.

AFRICOM statement confirmed that 2 Al-Shabaab members were killed in the airstrike which comes as allied forces continue operations against the group since last month.

The U.S. military resumed airstrikes in Somalia against Al-Shabaab since Biden authorized the redeployment of American special forces to the country in May 2022.

The latest airstrike, carried out on Oct 23, was the 8th recorded in 2022, according to the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) website.

The ongoing military operation comes as Somalia faces the worst drought in 40 years that pushed locals to flee from remote regions to big cities in search of food and water.

The militants, who are seeking to overthrow the Western-backed central government lost dozens of villages in central regions – Hiran, Galgadud, and Middle Shabelle region.
