MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Somali government has announced that a planned operation killed one of the most senior leaders of Al-Shabaab named Abdullahi Nadir.

The Ministry of Information said that Nadir was killed in a covert operation supported by foreign partners that took place in Haramka village located in the Middle Jubba region on Oct 1.

The slain militant leader who served as the Da'wah wing head and finance manager of the group was prepared to replace the sick leader of Al-Shabaab Ahmed Diriye [Abu Ubaidah].

Somali Government described as “a thorn removed from Somali people” the killing of Al-Shabaab's top leader and one of the co-founders of the Al-Qaeda-linked terror group.

The Somali government said that Nadir was a wanted leader in Al-Shabaab with a $3 million US bounty on his head. His group is yet to comment on the report of the death.

If confirmed, it will be a blow to Al-Shabaab as the group lost key ground to Somali troops in the ongoing military operation. US military is providing air support to the partners on the ground.
