KISMAYO, Somalia - Al-Shabaab militants have attacked a Jubaland military base in Bar Sanguni on the outskirts of Kismayo in the Lower Jubba region on Wednesday morning.
Local officials say heavy fighting between the forces from the Jubaland and Al-Shabaab erupted in the village following the ambush assault which comes as the region set to begin the Lower House election.
Residents reported casualties on both sides, as well as fears of civilians as a result of the fighting.
Jubaland military officials told the media that the regional troops have successfully repulsed the Al-Shabaab attack and inflicted losses upon the militants who later fled from the area.
The situation in Bar Sanguni was calm and the Jubaland forces are in control of the town which lies about 50 kilometers north of Kismayo, a port city that once served as the nerve financial hub for Al-Shabaab.
The Kenyan military has been manning the city since its liberation in late 2012 from Al-Shabaab during a large-scale offensive in most parts of southern Somalia to retake areas under the militant group.
