MOGADISHU, Somalia - The US-trained Danab commandos have captured an Al-Shabaab bomb expert during a covert operation in the Lower Shabelle region, south of Somalia, a commander said.

Hassan Abdullahi Abshir who was in charge of making explosive devices for the Al-Qaeda-linked group fell to the hands of the elite forces after a raid on his house in Yaaq Bishar area on Wednesday.

The Commander of the 5th Division of Danab brigade of the Somali military major Arab Dheeg Ahmed said that the detained commander was on their radar and tracked down for weeks to capture.

Ahmed added that the government forces have also killed other members of the Al-Shabaab during the operation in several Al-Shabaab-held villages in the volatile region bordering the capital.

The Danab commander announced that the army had taken out mines and buried them in the ground, promising to continue the operation hunting down the Al-Shabaab which poses threat to security.

The latest operation comes a day after the US agrees to increase the size of Somalia’s Danab special forces which have been proven as a capable force to get rid of Al-Shabaab in Somalia.
