Bomb kills Mogadishu police chief during front line visit

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The chief of Mogadishu police Brigadier General Farhan Qarole was killed on Friday morning by a bomb blast during a front-line visit, the office of the prime minister has confirmed.

The brave police commander died when an improvised explosive device struck him while taking a talk during combat operations against Al-Shabaab in the vicinity of Basra, 30Kms north of the capital.

The Al-Qaeda-linked militant group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast which also killed a state-owned TV cameraman Ahmed So’dal who was on the frontline assignment to film the operation.

Farhan Qarole left Mogadishu early in the morning to the battle zone in Basra to take part in the offensive aimed at quelling Al-Shabaab militants in the area which served as a key terrorist base for many years.

Gen Fahran’s killings sent a shock wave among the Somali people as well as the government since the country lost a hero in the war on Al-Shabaab. He led high-profile operations during his life in the police.

His death comes a day after Al-Shabaab killed a leading traditional elder Elmi Hagar in a blast that occurred at El-Qohle village outside Moqokori town within the Hiran region. Hagar was part of anti-al-shabaab fight.
