MOGADISHU, Somalia - The government forces have taken over the control of a strategic town in the Middle Shabelle region in southern Somalia from Al-Shabaab on Sunday during an operation.
The ministry of information announced that the army backed by the local residents captured the Ali Gaduud mosque area after fierce fighting that killed at least 100 Al-Shabaab militants.
The specially trained forces from Danab and Gorgor brigades have driven Al-Shabaab out of the town and killed 100 militants," said the statement from the information ministry, obtained by KON.
Ali Gadud Mosque, where the battles against Al-Shabaab were going on in the last few days, was a strategic area for the Al-Shabaab as it connects the capital to the central regions.
The operation was carried out in response to Saturday's two car bomb explosions at the ministry of education at Zoobe junction in Mogadishu, which killed more than 100 people dead and wounded hundreds.
