UK’s Development Minister meets with Somalia president

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud received the UK's Minister of State for Development and Africa Andrew Mitchell who arrived in Mogadishu on Wednesday.

The head of the state and the visiting British minister discussed the strengthening of the bilateral relations between Somalia and the UK and the importance of Britain's support to the Horn of Africa country which now facing the worst drought in 40 years that affected 8 million people, half of the population. 

During the meeting president Hassan Sheikh shared with the minister the achievements made in the liberation of the country from Al-Shabaab, economic development, and state building process.

UK Minister Mitchell praised the Somali government and its people for their courage and commitment to fight against Al-Shabaab and progress in debt relief through economic reforms.

In addition, he pointed out that the UK will play a major role in drought relief and help Somalia receive development projects from donors as it attempts to overcome the current challenges.

The UK is one of the countries at the forefront of those who help Somalia in security and budgetary support areas, and it trains the country's army soldiers at a military base in Baidoa city.
