UN envoy urges Somali leaders resolve pre-election standoff

DHUSAMAREB, Somalia – The United Nations [UN] envoy for Somalia James Swan reiterated the world body’s call for dialogue to end the current deadlock over the country’s electoral process.

Swan made the remarks during a press conference with Galmudug state leader Ahmed Abdi Karie alias Qoor-Qoor who hosted the UN delegation at his office in the central town of Dhusamareb on Sunday.

The UN Assistance Mission in Somalia [UNSOM] said in a statement that the talks between the envoy and the regional state leader covered the wider political situation in Somalia, particularly the elections.

“We urge all of Somalia’s leaders to make every effort to engage in dialogue in a collegial spirit so that the national elections are held on the basis of broad consensus, rooted in the September 17th Agreement, and underpinned by transparency, fairness, and inclusivity,” Mr. Swan said.

The international partners urged the Somali Government to convene a forum in Mogadishu with all political stakeholders to reach a consensus on the outstanding contentious issues related to the polls.

The opposition candidates demanded the disbandment of the electoral commission appointed by PM Role that was packed with Farmajo allies last year and form a neutral body to hold an inclusive and credible election.

UN reiterated the view of the Int’l partners that a spirit of “consensus and collaboration, putting the good of the country first,” is required to ensure Somalia remains on a clear path to peace and stability.
