The deadline was originally Dec. 31, 2022, decided by Resolution 2628 of March 2022, which reconfigured the AU Mission in Somalia into ATMIS.
Last month, the UN Security Council voted to prolong the embargo. According to Mogadishu, the extension strengthens the insurgent organization Al- Shabab’s position and sustains the nation’s precariousness.
Somalia is currently facing one of the most severe droughts in history, with a looming famine and the possibility of severe loss of life due to hunger, malnutrition, and disease.
Somalia’s government under recently elected President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has been engaged in a new offensive against al-Shabab, including efforts to shut down its financial network.
The terrorist group has also destroyed part of the riverbank of the Shabelle river, houses, a bridge, the disabling of telecommunication antennas, and 11 school buildings.
The leaders called on the UNSC to lift the arms embargo “to ensure that Somalia is sufficiently equipped to effectively address the security threat posed by the Al Shabab and other terrorist groups.”
The high-level drought response meeting is coming at a time when there is a severe drought in many parts of the country, as well as an ongoing war against the Al-Shabaab which lost key ground to SNA and local residents.
The President expressed his commitment to the fight against terrorism and restoring stability as the new offensive began in central Somalia making historic gains against Al-Shabaab.
The president, according to Villa Somalia is expected to hold talks with several foreign leaders on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Last week, United Nations Relief Chief Martin Griffiths has visited Somalia's South West state, the epicenter of the country's severe drought.
Somalia is facing its worst drought in 40 years following the failure of the rainy season for 4 years in a row, according to the UN.
It said aid groups on the ground are doing all they can to save lives and livelihoods, noting that by the end of July, they had assisted 5.3 million people.
